The Stranger Things’ Upside Down-esque world that Edward enters at certain points are a highlight. Edward is seemingly placed in these locations as the game progresses.

There is no way to travel between these places. The motel, a house in a corn field, a diner, a library – they’re all supposedly in the same town but you’d never think it. Every chapter takes place in a distinct location. The set pieces in Those Who Remain, while creepy, have a very disjointed feeling to them. Spoiler alert: Edward doesn’t think to just carry a flashlight with him. How does our hero survive? In the simplest terms, by turning on light switches. Things quickly go sideways when Edward’s car is stolen and he is forced to travel by foot to the nearby town of Dormont.Įdward learns he must stay in the light to survive, as there are ghastly figures awaiting him in the dark. The protagonist, Edward, is an apologetic man intent on heading to a dingy motel to break things off with the woman with whom he’s been cheating on his wife. However, Those Who Remain is not able to live up to its promise. On the surface, this sounds like an incredible combination. There are also some nods to David Lynch’s Twin Peaks and even a sprinkle of everyone’s favorite Netflix series, Stranger Things. In practice, however, this game shares a lot more similarities with Remedy Entertainment’s Alan Wake – an absolute favorite game of mine and Hideo Kojima’s playable teaser, PT. When I was first offered Those Who Remain, the title sounded like a not-so-subtle nod to Last of Us. But is it a game worth playing? Are you Afraid of the Dark? If you fall in either of the first two categories, Camel 101’s Those Who Remain will pique your terror-seeking interests. Lastly, there is the type that will not play horror games under any circumstances. The type that will play the game with all of the lights on to make sure that no one sneaks up and murders them.

The type that will put on a good pair of headphones, turn all of the lights out, and relish in the psychological terror felt at every turn. Those Who Remain places you in an up-close, psychological horror story set in the sleepy town of Dormont – a town in a spiraling split from the fabric of reality, warped by darkness and the deeds of the Citizens who reside.Ĭonfront the uncomfortable horrors reflected by the darkness and survive the night of Dormont as Edward is confronted with a test of his sanity, morality and the shadows of evil that lurks below. There are three types of people when it comes to horror video games. The horrors and darkness that thrive in the corner of every eye are torn loose… As Edward pulls into the Golden Oak Motel, he is unaware just how much this night will change his life… Edward had a good life, a beautiful wife and the perfect little girl, yet finds himself several whiskeys down and driving through the night of Dormont to end his secret affair - in a bid to fix his mistakes.

Some mistakes should never happen, not when your life is complete – and yet they do. Whispers of disappearances carry through the town as a burgeoning, uneasy and irrational fear begins to spread and darkness comes to be an unwelcome reflection to Those Who Remain. As the lights go out, the embers of darkness are stoked in the sleepy town of Dormont.
